Escritora de vanguardia estadounidense. Nació en el seno de una acaudalada familia y estudió en Radcliffe College antes de trasladarse a París, donde vivió a partir de 1909 junto a su compañera Alice B. Toklas (n. 1877–m. 1967). Su hogar fue a la vez un salón donde se reunían importantes artistas y escritores como Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Sherwood Anderson y Ernest Hemingway. Fue de las primeras partidarias del cubismo y trató de aplicar las teorías cubistas en su obra, lo que queda de manifiesto en su poemario Tender Buttons [Tiernos botones] (1914). Su prosa se caracterizó por un estilo único marcado por la repetición, la fragmentación y el uso de un presente continuo, como se aprecia en su novela La hechura de los americanos (escrita entre 1906 y 1911, editada en 1928). Su libro más leído, Autobiografía de Alice B. Toklas (1933), es en realidad la autobiografía de la propia escritora. Entre sus otras obras se cuentan Cuatro santos en tres actos (1934) y La madre de todos nosotros (1947), libretos operáticos musicalizados por Virgil Thomson.
